79R Promotions to Staff Sergeant

79R Promotions to Staff Sergeant

Team,

It is always a great day when CSM Stoneburg and I can share good news with the USAREC Team!

I want to begin by congratulating the following 79R Sergeants who will be promoted to Staff Sergeant in July!

SGT Matthew M. Heim
SGT Richard D. Lermy
SGT Kenneth D. Olsen
SGT Charles D. Sanders
SGT Andrea S. Witt
SGT Michael J. Woodard

As you know, I sent a Strength Six Sends message in May that addressed the rank structure imbalance that prevented us from promoting 79R Sergeants to Staff Sergeant because of the overstrength of Staff Sergeants in our command. In that message, I informed you that I was suspending further reclassifications to 79R. Since then, CSM Stoneburg and I have worked diligently with senior leaders within Department of the Army (DA) G1 to correct the imbalance.

As a result of these efforts and the professionalism and understanding of senior leaders within DA G1, the Army will adjust the required promotion points for 79R Staff Sergeants each month through the end of the year. These adjustments will allow USAREC to properly align and balance our 79R rank structure.

We will continue to work with DA G1 and we anticipate Staff Sergeant promotions will continue through October at a rate that will allow us to balance our Staff Sergeant strength and promote the majority of promotable Sergeants within the command. The DA G1 also expects to exhaust the 79R Sergeant First Class list no later than November 2016. The combination of promotions to Staff Sergeant and Sergeant First Class will bring our 79R Staff Sergeant strength below 100% instead of being overstrength.

While we still have additional analysis to conduct, we expect to lift the suspension on reclassifications in the October 2016 timeframe. However, I want to stress the fact that because there are no authorized 79R Sergeant positions in USAREC, we will likely restrict reclassifications to Staff Sergeants and above going forward. Otherwise, we may find ourselves suffering from the same imbalance again. CSM Stoneburg and I will make a final decision within the next 60 days. We must ensure only those who have mastered the profession and truly desire to reclassify are able to do so. We will continue to keep you informed of any and all changes as they pertain to career progression and force management within USAREC.

CSM Stoneburg and I would like to thank the leaders for bringing this issue to our attention. We would like to think this news will lift the spirits of those promotable Sergeants who did not think they had a chance of getting promoted in the near future.

In closing, and on behalf of the entire US Army Recruiting Command, CSM Stoneburg and I want to congratulate the promotable 79R Sergeants and future Staff Sergeants on your upcoming promotions!

Strength Starts Here!
