Master recruiter badge hands-on performance
testing FY 16 begins

FORT KNOX, Ky. -- Sixteen Soldiers from across U.S. Army Recruiting Command began the Hands-On Performance Testing for the Master Recruiter Badge here Oct. 31.

Much like the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Master Recruiter Badge is designed to recognize recruiting Soldiers who have demonstrated a mastery of their profession.

"The Master Recruiter Badge is a symbol of the competence and confidence required of a successful USAREC [noncommissioned officer]," said Sgt. 1st Class Robert Eichelberger, center leader of Evansville North Recruiting Center in Evansville, Indiana.

Eichelberger earned the Master Recruiter Badge in November 2015. He said he believes as leaders we are expected to set the example and inspire others.

"I wear the Master Recruiter Badge as a way to influence fellow leaders to challenge themselves and strive for excellence in all aspects of soldiering," Eichelberger said.

Soldiers assigned to USAREC have the opportunity to compete for this badge only once a year. Those who decide to vie for the badge must meet multiple requirements to compete, including receiving a recommendation from their brigade command sergeant major with an endorsement from the brigade commander, having 18 months minimum assigned as a recruiter, and having a passing score for a record Army Physical Fitness Test within six months of competing.

There are two separate tests Soldiers must successfully complete to earn the master recruiter title. The first is the Master Recruiter Badge Competency Test. The test is a one-hour timed, proctored examination containing 70 questions from USAREC regulations and manuals. Soldiers who achieve a score of 85 percent or higher on the test move on to the Hands-On Performance Test.

The Hands-On Performance Test requires competitors to be evaluated on 10 different individual tasks using written, virtual and face-to-face observation. Some of the tasks required are an enlisted eligibility examination consisting of 20 scenario-based questions, develop a plan in support of center recruiting operations plan, implement a school recruiting program, and conduct prospecting activities. A full list of tasks can be found in the Master Recruiter Badge Memorandum of Instruction.

"Preparation to earn the badge consists of countless hours reviewing current doctrine and USAREC guidance," Eichelberger said. "Master Recruiter Badge competitors must perform recruiting tasks under pressure, in simulated real-life scenarios. This enhanced focus on duty performance and expertise is invaluable experience to the future senior NCOs of USAREC."

This is the third year of the Master Recruiter Badge program, and only 10 Soldiers within the command have earned the prestigious badge thus far.

This year's competition runs through Nov. 10.
